{"id":98038,"date":"2023-10-19T13:39:12","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T11:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jardinartificial.es\/the-european-union-does-not-ban-artificial-turf\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T09:57:20","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T08:57:20","slug":"the-european-union-does-not-ban-artificial-turf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jardinartificial.es\/en\/the-european-union-does-not-ban-artificial-turf\/","title":{"rendered":"The European Union does not ban artificial turf"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The recent <strong>approval<\/strong> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/buscar\/doc.php?id=DOUE-L-2023-81334\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Regulation (EU) 2<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.boe.es\/buscar\/doc.php?id=DOUE-L-2023-81334\"><strong>023\/2055<\/strong><\/a> by the <strong>European Commission<\/strong> has generated some<strong> concern among artificial turf users<\/strong>. The <strong>alarming <\/strong>media coverage has led people to believe that <strong>the use of artificial turf would<\/strong> be completely <strong>banned<\/strong>. However, this news has been <strong>misinterpreted<\/strong> and in reality what has been approved is a stricter regulation for certain materials used by manufacturers.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-el-reglamento-ue-2023-2055-no-prohibe-el-cesped-artificial\"><strong><strong>Regulation (EU) 2023\/2055<\/strong> does NOT ban artificial turf.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>It is essential to explain that <strong>this regulation does NOT prohibit artificial turf<\/strong>, but focuses on <strong>regulating the infill or substrate of artificial turf,<\/strong> specifically in relation to microplastics. To clarify possible doubts, we are going to detail the most important aspects of this regulation and how it affects: <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-afecta-al-cesped-artificial-decorativo\"><strong>Does not affect decorative artificial turf<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The <strong>first and most important clarification<\/strong> is that the REACH Regulation <strong>does not affect decorative artificial turf<\/strong>, that is, the one that is installed in gardens, terraces, interiors, public areas and businesses. In short, the one we sell in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jardinartificial.es\/en\/\"><strong>online store Artificial Garden<\/strong>.<\/a> This type of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jardinartificial.es\/cesped-artificial\/\"><strong>artificial grass<\/strong><\/a><strong> is installed without infill or with silica infill, rubber is never used as an alternative,<\/strong> therefore, <strong>its use and installation will remain as to date.<\/strong> In addition, <strong>decorative artificial grass<\/strong> is a <strong>sustainable and eco-friendly option <\/strong>due to the <strong>low water consumption<\/strong> required for its maintenance. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alternativas-permitidas\"><strong>Alternatives allowed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>From the date of entry into force of the regulation, i.e. <strong>after October 17, 2031<\/strong>, no new artificial turf fields with infill granulates considered microplastics, smaller than 5 mm in size, may be installed. However, the installation of <strong>artificial sports turf fields <\/strong>using <strong>more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives<\/strong> with organic infill such as <strong>cork, wood or olive pits<\/strong> <strong>will be allowed<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-existe-una-moratoria-de-8-anos-hasta-su-aplicacion\"><strong>There is a moratorium of 8 years until its application.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The regulation establishes a <strong>moratorium of 8 years from October 17, 2023<\/strong>. During this period, the installation of <g id=\"gid_2\">artificial sports turf fields<\/g> with infill considered to be microplastics <g id=\"gid_1\">is permitted<\/g>, the most common being that derived from the recycling of used tires. This means that, <strong>until 2031<\/strong>, it will be possible to continue installing artificial turf fields with this type of infill.  <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uso-continuado-de-campos-instalados-previamente\"><strong>Continued use of previously installed fields<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>It is important to emphasize that, after the 2031 ban date, <strong>the use of previously installed fields<\/strong> using these granulates <strong>will not be prohibited<\/strong>,<strong> nor will they be forced to be deinstalled and disposed of<\/strong>. Existing fields may continue to be used without problems.<\/p>\n\n<p>In summary, the new EU regulation <strong>does NOT ban artificial turf<\/strong>, but focuses on the <strong>regulation of certain types of infill <\/strong>(those containing microplastics) in artificial sports turf. This regulation <strong>seeks to promote sustainability and environmental protection<\/strong>.
